 Kindergarten Information

Absences: Please call the school office at 827-8091!

Arrival: School Hours are 9:00 – 3:15 p.m. Students will not be supervised on the playground until 8:45 a.m. Students should go to Line up on the playground while waiting for school to begin.  Staff will be on duty at 8:45!

Attendance: A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the parent and the school.  Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation.  Regular attendance without tardiness is a key.

Assemblies: Each day we will start with an all school assembly.  During that time we will be greeted by our principal, hear information, and say our school pledge and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Awards Assemblies: Awards Assemblies will be held throughout the year to recognize children’s good behavior.

Backpacks: Your child should bring their backpack or school bag to school every day! Please remember to check your child’s backpack every night after school for important notes, art projects, homework folder and etc.

Birthdays: Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring treats and juice boxes for the class. Please send a note a day or two in advance so I can set aside some class time for the treat.  Please be sure that they are store bought.

Book Orders: Throughout the year I will send home book orders.  If you would like to order books for your child please send cash or a check payable to Scholastic with the order.

Clothes: Please send your child to school in clothes appropriate for learning. Do not send your child to school so "dressed up" that you might be concerned about her or him "getting dirty." Becoming involved in kindergarten activities often means that the students will get a little "messy."  Also make sure your child wears gym shoes on the days we go to PE. Please make sure that your child has an extra change of clothing: shirt, pants, underwear, socks, etc: just in case they have a toileting accident!

 .

Differentiated Instruction: Because all children are unique and special, they may be at many different instructional levels. Since it is my responsibility to take each child from where he or she is to a higher level, students may be learning concepts different from his/her peers.  With this type of teaching in the classroom, you can be sure that your child's individual needs will be met.

Dismissal: Bus riders will be taken to the gym to line up with students by bus. They will be taken to the buses by on duty teachers.  Students who will be picked up will be at the flag pole at the front of the building.

Field Trips: We will have several field trips during the school year. We often need parent volunteers on the trips, and chaperones will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis.  Please return permission slips and money if it’s needed as soon as possible after they are sent home.

Illness: The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning.  It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill.  Children function more effectively and can learn in the classroom when they are healthy.

Lunch: Our class will be eating lunch from 11:40-12:00.  Please remember to pay for your child’s lunch weekly/monthly if at all possible.  If your lunch account is empty, your child will still receive lunch, a balance of what you owe will be recorded.

Newsletters: I will be sending home newsletters throughout the year to inform you on our themes and upcoming events.

Outside Time: The children will be going outside during lunch recess from 12:00-12:20 every day. Please keep this in mind when helping your child to select clothing for the day.

Parental Involvement: Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school! Let me know if you are interested in volunteering.  This year a new policy will require all volunteers to go through a background check.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent / Teacher Conferences will be held in October and February. Other Parent / Teacher Conferences can be scheduled as needed.

Parties & Celebrations: We will have class parties from time to time for special occasions and holidays.  I will send home a sign up sheet ahead of time if you would like to participate in the party or send in items.

Quiet Time: Each day after recess we will have a 15-20 minute quiet time.  While the children are resting I will read stories to them.

Report Cards: Report cards will be given to you at the Parent /Teacher Conferences. Your child’s final report card will be mailed to you at the end of the school year!

Transportation: If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus, you must send a written note or call the school office. Do not rely on your child to tell us this information, because children often become confused and relay information incorrectly. If no written note is received and you have not called the school office, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

Visitors: ALL GUESTS (including familiar faces) are required to check in at the office and wear a guest badge. Irving School welcomes and encourages family involvement and the presence of a guest badge will help identify visitors to all faculty and staff.   It is important to remember that while this may seem inconvenient to frequent visitors, it is the goal and responsibility of the school to create a safe learning environment.

Curriculum

Language Arts: Our language Arts curriculum includes the Houghton Mifflin reading series, the Letter People, and Michael Heggerty’s phonemic awareness curriculum.

Social Studies Alive is our Social Studies curriculum. With this curriculum we will learn about ourselves, our school families, our home families, our community and etc.

Science: Our Science curriculum is Scott Foresman Science. With this curriculum we will learn about the needs of plants and animals, growing and changing, plants and animals all around, our land, water and air, weather and seasons, matter, heat and light, how things move, day and night and how things work.

Math: The kindergarten mathematics curriculum utilizes a hands-on, problem solving approach that provides students with mathematical experiences that will help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue through their school career and their lives.

Centers: Your child will participate in daily centers to help promote social and academic skills.  As the year progresses the centers will become more academic.

Students will also participate in PE, music, art, and library.
